Calling on the rich artistic and cultural traditions of
their countries, architects in Western Europe have
succeeded in renewing their vocabulary in a funda-
mental way. Despite unprecedented economic
pressures, a new generation of creative architects
like Erick van Egeraat and Ben van Berkel in The
Netherlands, Schneider + Schumacher in Germany
and Dominique Perrault in France has shown a
capacity to deal not only with the historic environ-
ment of European cities, but also with the more
immediate Modernist past. Slightly older Euro-
pean architects, like juha Leiviskä, Richard Rogers,
Aldo Rossi and Alvaro Siza have demonstrated a
continued creativity, which places them at the fore-
front of contemporary architecture in the world.
Philip Jodidio was born in New jersey in 1954. He
studied art history and economics at Harvard, and
has been editor-in-chief of the French art magazine
Connaissance des Arts in Paris since 1980. He has

relles Erbe gelang es Architekten in Westeuropa,

Trotz zunehmender ökonomischer Zwänge zeigt
eine neue Generation kreativer Architekten wie
Erick van Egeraat und Ben van Berkel in den Nie-
derlanden, Schneider + Schumacher in Deutsch-
land sowie Dominique Perrault in Frankreich ihre
Fähigkeit, nicht nur mit dem historischen Kontext
europäischer Städte, sondern auch mit der unmit-
telbar zurückliegenden Moderne umzugehen.
Andere europäische Architekten wie Juha Leiviskä,
Richard Rogers, Aldo Rossi und Alvaro Siza stellen
ihre kontinuierliche Kreativität unter Beweis und
zählen damit weltweit zur Elite zeitgenössischer
Architekten.
Philip Jodidio wurde 1954 in New jersey geboren. Er
studierte Kunstgeschichte und Wirtschaftswissen-
schaften in Harvard und ist seit 1980 Chefredak-
teur der französischen Kunstzeitschrift »Connais-
sance des Arts« in Paris. Er veröffentlichte
zahlreiche Texte zur Gegenwartsarchitektur.
Les architectes européens ont réussi a renouveler
radicalement leur vocabulaire en s'appuyant sur
les riches traditions artistiques et culturelles de
leur pays. Malgré des contraintes économiques
sans précédent, les jeunes talents - notamment
Erick van Egeraat et Ben van Berkel aux Pays-Bas,
Schneider + Schumacher en Allemagne, Domi-
nique Perrault en France - ont montré qu'ils
étaient capables de travailler avec et dans l'envi-
ronnement historique des villes européennes,
mais aussi de se mesurer a un passé moderniste
encore proche. Leurs grands aînés, comme par
exemple Juha Leiviskä, Richard Rogers, Aldo Rossi
ou Alvaro Siza, n'ont rien perdu de leur puissance
créatrice et restent d'importants acteurs de l'archi-
tecture contemporaine dans le monde.
Philip Jodidio est né en 1954 dans le New Jersey et
a étudié l'histoire de l'art et les sciences écono-
miques a Harvard. Depuis 1980, il est directeur de
la rédaction et rédacteur en chef du magazine artis-
tique français «Connaissance des Arts», Paris. Il est
l'auteur de nombreux articles et études sur l'archi-
