For a quarter of a century automobile enthusiasts were no more than aware that an exceptional collection of cars was being assembled in Alsace—a board tbat became near-legendary, for while rumours about the Schlumpf Collection were widespread, facts were very very rare.
The rumours—of over lOO Bugattis, of Delaunay-Bellevilles, Hispano-Suizas, Lorraines, Mercedes and Mercedes-Benz, Panhards, Voisins and many many more— remained rumours until the Spring of 1977, when under highly dramatic circumstances some of the secrets of the museum were revealed. The Guarrfi'űn reported 'the equivalent of the breaking open of Tutankhamun's tomb' it was a treasure trove of unbelievable richness.
The Schlumpf Obsession is two fascinating books in one—the improbable story of the brothers Schlumpf and the story of the car museum they created and then had to desert when it was complete to the last restaurant chair. It tells how the Schlumpfs built up their industrial empire, and of its collapse, it tells how they built up their jealously guarded hoard of cars; it recalls their triumphs (such as the acquisition of a unique group of cars for a fraction of their value in the 1970s) and their tragedies (such as a murder).
Many of the cars in the museum made automotive history, some have not been seen for decades, the survival of some is surprising, the existence of some was unknown to historic car enthusiasts. Here they are described by authoritative writers.
The Schlumpf Obsession is illustrated with 200 photographs, over half of them in colour. Vissza
