Here, in an entertaining and authoritative text, is the story of the automobile from its appearance as an experimental vehicle in 1885 to the present day. The automobile owes its origin to the steam vehicles that snorted and clanked their way along the rugged roads of a century ago. After them came Daimler's engine built in France by Panhard and Levassor. From this point onwards, the motor car never looked back. Models became more reliable and efficient and before long the internal combustion engine was rapidly dominating all forms of transport. With the arrival of the self-starter in 1912, car production mushroomed to such an extent that, by the time of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, armoured vehicles were preparing to take their places in the fighting forces.
This book covers all the many facets of the motor car's evolution, including the vintage years of 1921 to 1930 when smaller cars and cycle cars were made for the man-in-the-street. How the depression changed the face of the automotive world and how motor car production suffered during the Second Wodd War when much of Europe's production capacity was destroyed, is also dealt with in this book.
Town gas was used as a fuel at this period and there were many restrictions placed upon motoring. But when the war was over, new models and new production methods arose. More and more people began buying cars, and in the affluent 1960s there was a revival of motor sport and the arrival of advanced new models.
Energy conservation, pollution problems and rapidly changing manufacturing techniques have all played their part in the automobile's fascinating history. Vissza
