The humán genome research undergoes an enormous development nowadays. More and more humán diseases are described as inherited disorders with a mutant, non-functioning gene in the background. Model systems are used to help the knowledge of the pathomechanisms of these diseases. A new humán gene and its function are discussed in this book. The study describes one possible cause of the sideroblastic anémia with mitochondrial inheritance and alsó gives further details for the iron metabolism in the mitochondria, using the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The study highiights the toxic effects of mitochondrial iron accumulation and the cellular defense against it by the scavenger glutathione. Its under standing is facilitated by numerous figures.
