LLOW YOURSELF TO BE TAKEN ON A gently paced tour of 33 beautiful gardens, in England, Scotland, France, Italy and the United States, in the company of Peter Beales and Vivian Russell. The warmth and wisdom of rose-grower extraordinaire Peter Beales, who explores the many roses that live and thrive in their different settings, brings the gardens aUve, while Vivian Russell's superb visual sense has resulted in the evocative pictures that accompany every one.
In addition, for every garden, two classic roses are profiled with a close-up photograph and an in-depth description. Elsewhere in the book, a chart enables you to match roses to sites and conditions, and the essay "The Rose in the Landscape" offers further inspiration for your own gardening.

A few steps from the sunken Rose Garden is another part of the garden devoted to roses, the Princesses' Garden, for it was here that Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret did their gardening as little children. {Royal Lodge, Windsor, England)
Here, too, partially supported by the remnants of an old tree, "Rambling Rector" cascades into the water. . . most attractive when viewed with its reflections from the opposite bank. {Elsing Hall, Notfolk, England)
Here I found a cross between Rosa califomica and Rosa eglanteria, a shortish plant with one flower still braving the heat for me, its color that of Rosa califomica and its fragrance "Eglantine". It was near this rose that I spotted a pyramid of dead brushwood and twigs about three feet high partly concealed by honeysuckle. Kleine Lettunich explained that it was a home for chipmunks. {Amesti Road, California, LfSA)
Through an archway composed of the lovely soft pink Rosa gigantea hybrid "Belle Portugaise" and the floriferous lilac-pink "Blush Noisette", is an open space which has been turned into a small wildflower meadow where things natural grow in close embrace with lots of semi-naturalized roses. {Sonoma Mountain Road, California, USA)
A garden not so much secret as secretive, since you are not aware of its presence until you are actually standing in it, among the roses. {28 Faubourg d'Orléans, Pithiviers, France)
"I decided I had to replant all my garden with old roses, for there [Tyninghame] I found such beautiful roses with perfumes, soft colors, agreeable habits and captivating shapes - and most of them with French names." {Odile Masquelier, La Bonne Maison, Lyon, France)
Everyone who sees the castle tower of Ninfa from across the lake on the way in and spends time exploring the ruins of the old town in its twentieth-century role as a garden cannot help but fall in love with the place. {Ninfa, Latina, Italy) Vissza
