Aviation: The Early Years chronicles the first years of man-powered flight in photographs, from the end of the last century to the era of the great Zeppelins. Within the space of a few years at the turn of the 20th century the world shrank. Vast distances were traversed by air, technology raced ahead and whole new concepts of human activity became possible. It was a time of high excitement and experimentation - and from the start the camera recorded it.
This is the story of the pioneers and adventurers who extended the boundaries of human achievement: from Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Wright Brothers, Henry Farman, Louis Blériot and the Baroness de Laroche through to Charles Lindbergh and Amy Johnson. Their success did not, however, disguise the more sinister consequences of aviation - total war, including casualties beyond the battlefield - made possible by aerial bombardment.

Les Premieres Années de l'Aéronautique racontent, par la photographie, les débuts de l'aventure du vol humain, de la fin du XIX" siecle jusqu'a l'époque des grands Zeppelins. En l'espace de ces quelques années du XX'' siecle, le monde commence a se réduire tandis que l'on franchit par les airs des distances toujours plus importantes grâce aux progres de la technique, ouvrant ainsi a l'humanité des perspectives totalement nouvelles. De cette époque de passionnés et de folles expérimentations, la photographie a pu saisir tous les instants.
Voici l'histoire de ces pionniers et aventuriers de l'air qui ont permis a l'homme de repousser encore un peu ses limites : Alberto Santos-Dumont, les freres Wright, Henry Farman, Louis Blériot et la baronne de Laroche, sans oublier Charles Lindbergh et Amy Johnson. Leur gloire et les succes de l'aviation ne peuvent toutefois dissimuler des conséquences plus sinistres : rendue possible par le développement du bombardement aérien, la naissance d'une guerre totale ou les dommages infligés peuvent désormais s'étendre bien au-dela du champ de bataille.
