There was a time when the stairwell was part of the city. We didn't lock the entrance — there was no point. If someone arrived uninvited, there were eyes to behold them and lips to announce them. True, the lips were the janitor's, and he could be justifiably abhorred. All the same, anyone who was eager to inspect the forged iron railings or the fresco on the ceiling had free passage and was allowed to take photographs of the stairway and the courtyard. What is more, on sunny days they might even get invited in by Uncle Szilcz for a glass or two of cold beer. Mind you, getting your hands on a bottle of Jikettes was not an easy task even in the autumn.
In those years, the stairwell might have been a part of the city, but it was also ,an extension of the apartment. During the dinners at the Timars', a few people were even squeezed.into the. vestibule outside. But the janitor didn't mind and made no mention of it either. When we invited Vajta the upholsterer, he hauled the big armchair outside next to the stairs and kept hammering away there. If we went over to our neighbour Vass for some eggs, no one thought of locking the door. Everything stood wide open, and the corridor succumbed to our unspoken wish to let our things spill beyond our walls.
There were not only stunted flowers, baby carriages and bicycles lined up before the doors, but laughter, scents, quarrels and stories piled up out there, too. All those tastes, colours and moods floated there in the courtyard, creeping above the tiles, mingling in with the secrets of the chimneys, slowly filling the city. A distant relative of mine remarked that it must be good to live here.
