Pécs is a 2000-year-old city with a Mediterranean atmosphere and a rich cultural heritage.
It is a World Heritage city where every century has left its indelible mark. Its 4th century late Romanesque Christian necropolis is alsó a UNESCO World Heritage site Pécs, the city ofmuseums, is the bastion of modern as well as contemporaiy arts. Pécs, the city ofarts, offers a rich and varied selection of entertainment and the arts. Pécs, the city of grape and wine, is knownfor its cuisine, as well as its wine and wine-songfestivals. Pécs, the university city, is home to nearly thirty-thousand college students. Pécs is a city were national minority cultures coexist in a peaceful atmosphere. In 2010 Pécs will be the European Capital ofCulture. The city is preparing for this great event with large-scale investment projects and spectacular cultural programs.

Pécs, the capital of Baranya county, lies 200 kilometres south of Budapest, close to the Danube and Drava rivers. It is situated on rising ground at the southern foot of the Mecsek Hills.
Today its inhabitants number 170,000, and its rapid growth over the past decades has made it one of the country's largest cities. This development has stemmed from a number of factors: the mining of
coal and mineraJs; the city's univer-sities, colleges and theatre; and, last but not least, its favourable geo-graphical location and its veiy pleasant Mediterranean climate.
