Since her proclamation as an independent state in 1948 Israei had been in a state of war with lier Arab neighbors. Four fuil-scale wars had been waged yet their afternnath had neither resolved political issues nor brought the coveted peace any closer.
But, as the biblical Bool< of Ecclesiastes says, "for everything
there is a season a time for
war, and a time for peace." After 30 years of war and constant vigilance, an Egyptian leader rose up and called for peace. With an Arab world baying for his blood and an Israeli public saluting his courage. President Anwar Sadat flew into the enemy camp in pursuit of mankind's noblest aspiration. Just as crucial to the attainment of this elusive goal was the attitude of the newly-elected Israeli political leadership. Prime Minister Menachem Begin rose to the occasion, confounding his critics at home and abroad by proving statesmanship on a par with the Egyptian leader. Together the Jew and the Moslem led their peoples through 16 months of agonizing decisions and concessions until they attained what many had believed to be the impossible. Peace was achieved and a new era dawned for battle-weary men, women and children. Former Associated Press newsman Anthony 8. Pitch, the author of books on a number of countries, vividly traces the highlights along the road to peace, beginning with the signing of the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Egypt at kilometer 101 on the Suez-Cairo road in 1973. The erratic course, pock-marked with hope and despair, climaxes with the historic signing of the Peace Treaty in Washington on 26th March 1979 and concludes with the first fruits of open borders, the transfer of captured territory and the passage through the Suez Canal of Israeli naval craft.
