ART TREASURES OF MONTENEGRO This book presents, for the first time comprehensively, the art treasures of Montenegro, one of the six constituent republics of Yugoslavia, a small mountainous land with a war-torn history. Despite its small size, it has passed through all the recorded phases of European cultural development, beginning with the Paleolithic and the remarkable Crvena stijena (Red Rock) site. Significant traces have alsó survived from the Neolithic and metál ages, the pre-Illyrian and Illyrian-Celtic periods, the phase of Hellenism, Román rule and the epoch of Early Christian art. Somé of its fínest monuments are from the Byzantine period. At the time of the first independent state, Duklja (later known as Zeta), and during the periods of Nemanjic (Serbian), Balsic and Crnojevic rule in the Middle Ages, many notable works of art were created.
