The Age of Diminished Expectations
U.S. Economic Policy in the 1990s Paul Krugman
The Age of Diminished Expectations is a straightforward briefing on the U.S. economy for readers who want to be well informed without being overwhelmed by statistics, predictions of disaster, or boundless optimism. In a new preface to this paperback edition, Krugman addresses the current recession, the aftermath of the Gulf war, the plunging trade deficit, and the soaring budget deficit. "Krugman translates theory into enjoyable prose and makes difficult concepts seem simple. As he walks readers through such topics as income distribution, unemployment, the deficit, and competition with Japan, he explains fairly and completely how forces have interacted to diminish America's economic prospects." —Denise Demong, Business Week
"First-rate. . . . Krugman treats clearly and insightfully a broad range of economic issues. And he does so with an obviously effective yet too-seldom-used method: He actually looks at numbers." —David R. Henderson, Fortune
