This work is a descriptive analysis of those areas of contemporary English which are difficult for most foreign learners. It deals with the systems of the sounds and structures of the language in a clear and straightforward style suited to the postintermediate student and draws its examples largely from everyday spoken English. Paul Christophersen is at present Reader in English atthe New University of Ulster, Coleraine. His previous university appointments were Professor of English Language and Literature (Copenhagen), Professor of English, University College (Ibadan), and Professor of English Philology (Osio). He has been writing on linguistics and language learning since 1939. Arthur O. Sandved lectures in English at the University of Oslo, was formerly Lecturer in English at the University of Trondheim, and has written for Norwegian Universities Press. "An Advanced English Grammar" arose from their teaching advanced students of E.F.L. and the need to present a clear exposition of the ideas underlying modern grammatical thinking together with the application of these ideas to the fundamental systems of English.
