If Carl Michael Bellman (1740-95), a unique figure in world literature, has been as unknown to the world at large as he has been perennially popular in Scandinavia, it has been due to the untranslatability of poetry. His great song-cycle Fredman's Epistles, a genre, "which had no forerunners and cannot have any successors," is perhaps the only great work of poetic art to be conceived throughout to music. In Sweden it has been the means of preserving a whole treasure trove of lovely melodies, which once delighted Europe.
A brilliant mimic and improviser. Bellman was chiefly appreciated by his contemporaries as an entertainer who conjured up for them a drastic picture of the low-life of Stockholm. Subsequent generations have found in him a poet of almost Shakespearean dimensions.

A brilliant mimic and improviser. Bellman was chiefly appreciated by his contemporaries as an entertainer who conjured up for them a drastic picture of the low-life of Stockholm. Subsequent generations have found in him a poet of almost Shakespearean dimensions.
In this study, the first in English to give a comprehensive picture of Bellman and his art, the author has been able to exploit the research of the last thirty years, which has made it possible to see the last great troubadour as he really was and disentangle him from the figure of legend. The Life and Songs of Carl Michael Bellman. Genius of the Swedish Rococo, is a book to delight all who love poetry and the guitar song, of which the Swedish poet remains the supreme exponent.
THE LIFE AND SONGS OF Carl Michael Bellman
contains altogether 184 pages of text and 72 picture-pages with more than 100 illustrations, most of which are in gravure. Also six colour plates and a map (folded) of Stockholm in Bellman's day. The illustrations have been chosen from the foremost museum and library archives in Sweden. Vissza
