Anyone who has visited an art gallery will understand the value of being able to look at paintings close up, to see the way the colours have been used and how the paint has been handled. Now you can have your own personal art gallery in this series of books, The History and Techniques of the Great Masters. Each book brings you a selection of ten or more famous paintings, magnificently reproduced in full colour, and with actual size details so that you can see the way the artist has worked - just as though the paintings were hanging on your own walls. The text analyses each painting in turn, and the captions teli you exactly which techniques the artist has used to obtain particular effects. Wherever possible, the author provides full information about the types of paint brushes, canvas and priming favoured by the artist, and how the colours were mixed and applied.

1 Camille Pissarro sometimes seems overshadowed by the more flamboyant Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of his generation, but artistically he was the most important of them all, and they all acknowledged him as master and loved him as a friend. Cézanne, one of the many painters who worked with and learned from him, described him as "that humble, colossal Pissarro," and even the scornful Gauguin admired his early work. The man who was to exert such a powerful influence on the avant-garde of Paris was born on the tiny island of St Thomas in the West Indies. He arrived in Paris in 1855, and after studying under Corot and attempting to flnd success via the official Sálon, became friendly with the "new wave" of painters such as Monet and Cézanne, with whom he exhibited at the Sálon des Refusés. His insistence on painting landscape as it really was annoyed critics, who were accustomed to more idealized treatments and complained that he apparently "could find nothing poetic in nature" For much of his life his talent went unrecognized, and he and his large family lived in considerable poverty. Yet Pissarro never compromised - his paintings are the end-product of a perpetual and unflagging search for artistic truth. His output was prodigious, encompassing all techniques and média, but it is his oil paintings that show most clearly the development and refinement of his ideas about painting, and they remain an endless source of instruction and delight.
