A stone arched gate, a millstone path, a blue and white tiled pool with a quiet fountain, brilliant marigolds, stone sculptures of playful angels and stately lions—the Mexican garden is a serene oasis that displays a diversity and ingenuity that is truly astonishing.
Because of Mexico's pleasant landscapes and warm climate the extension of the home to include outdoor living has been a natural part of residential architecture and decoration. Sometimes bold and starkly elegant, sometimes romantically ornate, these gardens tastefully combine Mexico's double heritage of Indian influence and the multi-faceted Spanish influence and provide an expression in building and design that is unique and rich.
Patios and Gardens of Mexico visits scores of Mexican homes to show the variety of possibilities. Over 300 magnificent photographs and drawings and a detailed text record a treasure of examples of outdoor planning and decoration, including gates, entrances and paths, walls, terraces, stairs, water fountains, swimming pools, sculpture, furniture, lighting, balconies, roof gardens as well as trees, plants and flowers. The gardens examined represent almost every period of Mexican architecture from sixteenth century colonial architecture through contemporary experiments.
The home builder and architect, the home-maker and interior decorator will find inspiration here. The lover of beautiful and tasteful homes will find an accurate record of a way of life in which architecture, climate and tradition combine to satisfy a gracious and leisurely view of civilization.
