Patients, Physicians and Illness is a book for all those interested in the human side of medicine. It reveals the sick person as more than a patient - as a person whose nationality may have a lot to do with whether he will cry in pain, whose religion may make him hesitate to see a doctor at all, whose fears may drive him from responsible physicians into the hands of quacks.
It portrays the medical student and his family and compares it to that of the dental student and that of the law student. It shows his changing picture of himself, when he begins to think of himself as a doctor, and when at last he can maintain composure in the presence of life and death.
It depicts life in the hospital as that of a status-conscious community with its own symbols, conflicts and insecurities, where women are taught to hold doors open for men and surgeons tend to eat by themselves.
