In the Western population, ischemic heart disease is by far the most frequent organ-specific cause of death. During the last ten years, techniques to re-open a fresh thrombotic occlusion of a coronary vessel have become widely used. In the clinical situation progressed stages of ischemic myocardial injury prevail. The development of therapeutic principles suitable for the rescue of myocardium at the edge of that injury, is still hampered by the lack of knowledge about the pathogenesis of irreversible injury.
In this book the currently most favoured theories about the causes of irreversible ischemic myocardial injury are thoroughly discussed by an international group of experts.
