BATHOIOQICAL CIO^ STRIDOR AND COUGH IN INFANTS
A CLINICAL-ACOUSTIC STUDY
Various sound phenomena of infants, cry, breathing and cough are investigated in detail by the authors of this book. From these investigations important conclusions may be drawn concerning the well-being and general condition of the infants. From these investigations important conclusions may be drawn concerning the well-being and general condition of the infants. In disease, on the other hand, they may furnish important information on the site and origin of the underlying pathological changes. The authors' approach is a complex one. For diagnostic purposes they apply, in addition to the conventional examination methods of radiology and endoscopy, also the acoustic analysis of pathological sounds. Forty-two different sound signals are characterized acoustically. This is followed by the description of forty-one respiratory and nervous system disorders associated with pathological sound production. Finally, the diagnostic value of conventional examination methods is compared with that of spectro-graphic analysis. The individual types of pathological sound phenomena and their manifestation in pathological conditions are illustrated by sonagrams. Two gramophone records with typical cries, stridors and coughing sounds is attached to the volume. The authors attempted to find a novel objective approach to auditory signs and to offer a framework of a consistent typology of the sounds investigated. The data obtained are critically appraised from the point of view of diagnosis, therapy, prognosis and documentation. Vissza
