PASCIN
by Gaston Diehl
Wondrously prodigal with his time, his talent, his energy, and his money, according to the accounts of his friends Pascin was most probably the finest incarnation of the last oriental prince that ever existed. But is this sufficient reason for allowing his name to remain shrouded in such obscurity and mystery? Although he paid with his life for the privilege of ranking high among the artistes maudits - the damned - he possessed other merits besides those attributed to him by a legend which he often helped to create and whose immediate victim he became. To render justice to his name we must no longer consider only those amazing deeds that won him such sad fame and engulfed the reality of his life and his art. Thus with the same concern that he previously applied to the studies of Matisse, Picasso, and Derain, the author has set himself the task of reexamining the life and work of Pascin in the light of the documents of the period and the testimony of the... PASCIN
by Gaston Diehl
Thus with the same concern that he previously applied to the studies of Matisse, Picasso, and Derain, the author has set himself the task of reexamining the life and work of Pascin in the light of the documents of the period and the testimony of the men and women who both understood and encouraged the artist. Until now entire aspects of Pascin's career have been neglected: not only the caustic contributor to Simplicissimus or the more engaging draughtsman and illustrator, but also the painter who, even before 1914, tried modestly to compel recognition, and who pursued his vocation almost in despair during the six years that he lived in the United States. These years are no less deserving of our interest than the more familiar period of the last years in Paris. In this new perspective Pascin's suicide no longer appears to be a statement of failure, but the unavoidable fulfillment of a man ravaged by sickness and overwork who knew he had completely developed his art of rare wealth and profound unity, as the remarkable illustrations in this book will attest.
