For more tfion forty years the Konrad-Adenauer-Stifhjng (KAS) is engaged in the promotion of democracy, its principles and democratic actors around the globe. The KAS Democracy Report informs about the state of democracy and our world-wide activities in democracy promotion. The report 2007 focuses on political parties and their contribution to the : stabilization of democracy. "
Parties are seen as vital for pluralist democracy. They perform functions which cannot be fulfilled by other political organizations. Without parties, complex societies cannot be organized; legitimacy for state institutions and political decisions cannot be produced. Tne chapters present information on the development of party systems, political parties and their contribution to democratization from sixteen partner countries of KAS, Special interest is given to parties in young democracies and countries which experience a transformation from non-democratic rule to democracy.
