Baroque painting is regarded as the last of the pan-European styles. Visual art of the 17th century in Italy, France, England, Germany and Spain is treated in the first section of the book. Andreas Prater, whose post-doctoral thesis was "Caravaggio — light and colour", has been Professor of Art History at the University of Freiburg since 1994. Hermann Bauer was Professor of Art History at the University of Salzburg 1969-1973 and at the University of Munich 1973-1994. He has written numerous publications on Baroque and Rococo art.
