This book is an outetandiog addition to our knowledge of the life and work of this great Spanish painter. Picasso himself collaborated in its production and was responsible for checking the fidelity of the 44 colour reproductions it contains. He selected the painting which we are reproducing on the jacket as well as making special designs for the cover. He was greatly interested in another unique feature of the book: the Classified Catalogue, in which literally hundreds of his works are illustrated and arranged according to type and period. He has been most active in its compilation, with the result that it appears in an order and with a completeness that we can safely call défini-tive; it is an objective survey, but one which also contains Picasso's personal view of his development.
Picasso's work is discussed and assessed in great detail by Professor W. Boeck, the noted German authority on modern art, and a sensitively human account is given of the painter's career by his life-long friend, Jaime Sabartés. This text, with its charming idiosyncracies of style, provides a vital and valuable document on Picasso the man, as seen by an intimate. The two texts and the illustrations, which number more than 600, and include line-drawings, half-tones and colour-plates, are well served by extensive catalogues and indexes, making this book by far the most comprehensive ever published on its subject.
