Cezanne
Yvon Taillandier
Any discussion of modern art begins with Paul Cézanne. Arguably the greatest of the post-impressionists, his work and ideas were crucial to the stylistic and aesthetic development of many twentieth-century movements, especially cubism, abstract expressionism, and fauvism.
Cézanne was born and died in Aix-en-Pro-vençe, and the dramatic Provençal landscape was one of his greatest artistic influences. Nevertheless, Cézanne's work differed fundamentally from that of the impressionists, for he emphasized the underlying structure of objects far more than the effects of light upon them. To achieve the illusion of depth and volume on a flat canvas, Cézanne frequently juxtaposed articulated planes of paint.
In this volume, Yvon Taillandier explores Cézanne's art and life, and uses them as a starting point for tracing the development of modern art from the time of this French master to the present. Vissza
