The first two functions command the most interest among researchers. But, the motility aspect is unduly neglected. Impaired motility is more often the cause of clinically manifested complaints than are secretion or absorption disturbances. Among the complaints are functional passage disturbances such as achalasia, stomach evacuation problems, diarrhea and common constipation. Moreover, motility disturbances are often accompanying symptoms of pathologically altered secretion and absorption or, vice versa, the motility problems have a negatíve influence on the other two functions. The Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, with accompanying profuse gastric acid formation, can, on the one hand, cause diarrheas and functionally (e.g. hormonally) induced passage accelerations while, on the other hand, occasionally effecting a malassimilation of food. Furthermore, the gastrointestinal tract most often presents the somatic manifestations of emotional anxiety, which is particularly reflected by impaired motility. Disrupted motility of the gastrointestinal tract leads not only to theoretical problems but also raises genuine prcctical questions which demand answers. The present symposium is concerned with the physiologic, pathophysiologic, pharmacologic and clinical aspects of gastrointestinal motility. It provides the latest advances in this field as presented by outstanding and internationaily known specialists. Vissza
