Terrestrial paradise and primeval garden, ticien lep-resents an ideal that has inspired every one of the world's green spaces. Scholar and photographer Ovidio Guaita has spent more than ten years travel ing the world to document the myriad forms of his toric and contemporary gardens. This spectacular, full-color volume is the culmination of his work, presenting an unprecedented survey of landscape and garden design in more than fifty countries.
The author focuses not only on the most famous gardens of the world—Versailles in France; the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California; Blenheim Palace in England; the Alhambra in Granada, Spain—but also on a great number of unknown or little-known green spaces. The lands of the Far East—^^|apan, Korea, and China—continuously renew their ancient heritage in landscape. Islands such as Madeira, Madagascar, and Malta have all developed unusual gardens based on their unique vegetation. The Middle Eastern countries ol Yemen, Syria, and Iran feature sun-drenched courtyards in the midst of dramatic desert surroundings. In each of these exotic locations, Guaita has visited private estates and mansions as well as public sites to present a stunning panorama of gardens and landscapes.
In addition to eight short interludes that discuss the geography and vegetation of various regions, Guaita offers a concise and comprehensive history of the world's garden traditions, starting with the origination of designed green spaces in the Middle and Far East, soon spreading into Africa and throughout the lands of the Roman Empire. The medieval cloister garden and the Renaissance garden—which reached its peak in Italy—continue to provide precedents for landscape design. By the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the French garden style—grandiose and overscaled—predominated; in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Anglo-Saxon romantic gardens most influenced landscape design. The portrait of many of these historic gardens, as well as contemporary examples, is nothing less than a modern-day Eden. Vissza
