Elvis Presley's boyhood porch in Tupelo, Mississippi
A Celebration of the Porch
¦ "/he average literate I American—especially JL. one who's well-read in American fiction—is likely, at the mention of porches, to think first and last of a rangy white house banked with old trees and dark green shrubs, and fronted or ringed by a broad shady porch with rocking chairs and a hanging swing that will seat at least two peaceful adults or (better yet) one drowsy adult and a much-loved child, stroked by the merest trace of a breeze and engaged in a soft-voiced dialogue of no great moment as to subject or theme, though deeply rewarding to heart and mind through a whole life's memory."

T
t was a summer of wistaria. The twilight
was full of it and of the smell of his
father's cigar as they sat on the front
gallery after supper while in the deep
shaggy lawn below the veranda fireflies blew
and drifted in soft random."
—William Faulkner, ABSALOM, ABSALOM!
When William Faulkner wrote these words in 1936, he set a scene familiar and near to the heart of everyone who grew up in the South.
"Out on the porch " The very words bring to mind a mood, a feeling, an image of a place to relax and enjoy a cool breeze on a warm night, a place for reading, rocking, and storytelling.
Out on the Porch celebrates the beauty of porches, how we live on them, and the way we feel about them. It brings together over one hundred contemporary photographs and rare pictures from family archives and albums, porches ranging from magnificent galleries and porticos to humble back stoops and balconies. Here, too, scenes, recollections, and conversations have been

drawn from the many great southern writers who have grown up talking about Kfe out on the porch. The words of William Faulkner, James Agee, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Thomas Wolfe, and Mark Tvain are found alongside those of contemporary writers such as Josephine Humphreys, Clyde Edgerton, Annie Dillard, and Rick Bass.
Reynolds Price s introduction, 'The Lost Room," recalls his memories of a boyhood spent on and around "a particular porch in Warren County, North Carolina," and a typical day in late July of 1942.
Out on the Porch is a book for everyone who's ever passed a shady veranda and felt inclined to stop and rest.
