In May 1966 Sir Bernard Lovell, Professor of Radio Astronomy in the University of Manchester and Director of the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories, gave a series of lectures to an extramural audience at Jodrell Bank, where he was able to illustrate his theme by demonstrating the actual operation of the radio telescopes.
For the interest of the wide audience to whom this book will appeal. Sir Bernard has retained the element of demonstration by including in an appendix illustrations of the telescopes and their ancillary apparatus, together with a guide to their operation (the only source where this information can be obtained), and in addition a number of photographs of astronomical objects and their representation in the instruments.

The lectures themselves have been completely rewritten. They now comprise, in a succinct and readily intelligible form, an account of the main problems with which the radio astronomer is grappling, set in the context of the development of the science of astronomy through optical observation to the radio, satellite and space-probing investigations of the present day. Sir Bernard shows how the coming of larger and more refined apparatus in both the optical and radio fields has not only completely changed our conception of the universe, but also shown the solar system itself in a completely new light. A final chapter considers the implications of recent discoveries for speculation about the fundamental questions of the origins of time, space, and the universe.
For the student and the layman in all walks of life who wants to appreciate the significance of the current exploration of outer space, it is difficult to imagine that Sir Bernard's exposition could be bettered.
