"Anyone interested in literature (writer, critic, theoretician, or simply amateur) will find Oulipo a delight to read."—Sydney Levy, University of Wisconsin.
Far from frowning on literary rules and formulas, the contributors to this anthology see such constraints as stimuli for creativity. They belong to the Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle (Workshop of Potential Literature), or Oulipo. The Oulipo was founded in Paris In 1960 by Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais. Its members—eminent writers, mathematicians, and professors—are still devoted mainly to literary experimentalism.
To celebrate the Oulipo's twenty-fifth anniversary and to introduce its work to the Anglophonic world, Warren F. Motte Jr. has edited and translated a number of theoretical discussions and several exemplary texts by Queneau, Le Lionnais, Claude Berge, Georges Perec, Italo Calvino, and others. This collection demonstrates haikuization, Latin bi-squares, palindromes, lipograms, algorithms,... Tovább

This collection demonstrates haikuization, Latin bi-squares, palindromes, lipograms, algorithms, "combinatorics," multiple-choice plot development, and similar experiments. For, as Le Lionnais insisted, entertainments, pranks, and hoaxes, when they are the work of poets, still fall within the domain of serious literature. This book should appeal not only to lovers of literature but also to mathematicians, computer operators, and popular science enthusiasts.
Warren F. Motte Jr., assistant professor of French at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is the author of The Poetics of Experiment: A Study of the Work of Georges Perec (1984). The foreword is by Noël Arnaud, current president of Oulipo. Vissza
