SCAR
LEWIS
was born in New York City in 1914, and grew up on a small farm in upstate New York. He received his Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University, and has taught at Brooklyn College and Washington University. He is now Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois.
Oscar Lewis has been Field Representative in Latin America for the United States National Indian Institute, consulting anthropologist for the Ford Foundation in India, and the recipient of two Guggenheim fellowships. His field work has taken him from the Blackfoot Indians of Canada to Texas farmers, from a Cuban sugar plantation to Spain, and from Mexico to a village in northern India. The research for his current studies of the culture of poverty in Puerto Rico and New York has been supported by grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Research Institute for the Study of Man, the Social Security Administration and Welfare Administration Research Grants program, and the Research Board of the...
