Organizational Behaviour: Politics at Work brings a fresh perspective to the study of how people behave in organizations. This new approach, known as the political approacn, is developed as the major theme of the book, and is used to throw new light on existing theories about organizational behaviour.
Organizations do not have goals — only people do. Furthermore, people within the same oraanizations have different goals. Organizational Behaviour: Politics at Work takes this as its starting point, recognizing that organizations are a dynamic coalition of individuals and groups competing and co-operating as they each pursue their various objectives.
The most significant factor in organizational life is power. There are few situations in which one is not both wielding power and yet subject to it. It is an element in the goals of individuals, and a determining factor in the means available to achieve tnese goals.
Power is a complex phenomenon, but fundamental, and many conventional studies of organizational behaviour are inadequate because of their failure to recognize its centrality. Organizational Behaviour: Politics at Work remedies this situation.
The book is in three parts. In Part One ideas about organizations ore reviewed and the political approach is explained. In Part Two the major themes of organizational behaviour, motivation, leadership, group dynamics and organization cultures, structures and climates are presenteci and discussed in the light of the new perspective. In Part Three, the political approach is developed to the point where the reader should be better able to both understand and act in political situations.
