The Oregon coast is beyond cloubt the most beautiful and most wisely developed stretch of shoreline in America. From the Columbia River to the California bordér, this magnificent continental boundary runs the full rangé of kinds of beauty-rugged headlands, small coves, sandy beaches, sheer cliffs, fragile estuaries, broad tideflats and dense rain forests. No other photographer has spent so much of his life photographing and studying the coast as Ray Atkeson and few Oregonians have spent so much time traveling its entire length. The result of his quest for beauty is shown in this selection of his full-color photographs, undoubtedly the most beautiful collection on the coast in existence. Here you will see the sunny days and the stormy days, the foggy mornings and the red evenings. Here are the sea gulls and the sea lions, the contorted trees and tall, wild rhododendrons. The text by Archie Satterfield traces the history of the Oregon coast, the developmental problems and the emotional highlights of any trip down the coast. Together, the photos and text constitute a song of praise for one of the North American continent's natural wonders. It is a modern voyage of discovery you, the reader, will never forget. During the past three decades Ray Atkeson's photos of Northwest subjects have made him an institution; his name has become synonymous with the beauty of the West Coast of America, and no other photographer has so successfully captured the unique beauty of this part of the continent. Born and educated in the Midwest, Atkeson soon migrated to Oregon, primarily because of its scenery. His emergence as an internationally known photographer during the 1940s was the result of both talent and extremely hard work. For years he worked in a commercial studio in Portland on a six-day-a-week Schedule and used what little spare time he had left to wander the West, hiking the beaches, climbing mountains and wading rivers to accumulate a file of stunning photographs which show the Northwest at its finest. Atkeson is a familiar sight on mountain slopes and coastal headlands, his knapsack loaded with heavy camera equipment as he explores and captures on film the West's natural heritage. His labor was rewarded with numerous sales to national publications ranging from newspapers to magazines, from book illustrations to lucrative advertising and magaziné assignments. In 1946 he quit his job at the studio to try free-lancing and has been on his own since. As his photographic library increased and his reputation grew, he stopped accepting assignments and sold only from his extensive files. Vissza
