OPTIMUM DESIGN OF METAL STRUCTURES
JÓZSEF FARKAS Professor
Department of Materials Handling Equipments, Technical University of Miskolc, Hungary
Translation Editor: M. N. PAVLOVIÓ Department of Civil Engineering, Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London
This book employs modern mathematical and computer programming methods to treat optimum design problems of practical interest. It offers engineers a selection of efficient design methods for obtaining suitable and, at the same time, economical member dimensions, especially in the case of welded structures.
The book is divided into two main sections. Part 1 deals with general problems, design constraints and cost effectiveness, and surveys existing mathematical methods of optimization. Some topics of special interest treated here include the backtrack programming method, and the optimum design of hybrid and sandwich beams, closed press frames, and cellular plates. Cost-effectiveness of materials and... Tovább

Cost-effectiveness of materials and methods is scrutinized and expounded throughout the text.
Among the optimum design problems reviewed is that of welded hybrid I-beams subjected to bending, including the material costs of web and flanges; the simple formulae obtained are used to carry out a comparison between hybrid and homogeneous beams. Calculation methods for obtaining bending and shear stresses, as well as deflections in beams, are considered with special emphasis on optimization; and similar methods are also given for plate-and box-girder structures, as well as trusses and frames. Optimum dimensions are tabulated for various structural members; and there is a detailed bibliography consisting of about 300 references. Vissza
