George Soros is both a participant and an observer of the revolution which is sweeping through the Soviet Empire. In this book he tells the story of his involvement, which has grown in line with events. He sets out the philosophy which has gtiided him both as a speculator in financial markets (investors in his Quantum Fund have seen the value of their investment rise fourhundredfold in twenty years, an unparalleled performance) and as a philanthropist with foundations in Hungary (1984), China (1986, currently in suspension), Poland (1987), the Soviet Union (1987), Czechoslovakia (1989, but operating out of Sweden since 1979), Romania (1990, pending approval), Bulgaria (1990), Ukraine (1990) and Lithuania and Estonia (in formation).
He presents a theoretical framework which recognises that participants in history act on the basis of imperfect tmderstanding. He cormects the traditional mode of thinking with organic society, the critical mode with open society, and the dogmatic with closed society. He argues that open society is greatly superior in spite of all its imperfections, but he also stresses the negative aspect of that superiority : open society cannot be brought into existence simply by removing the constraints of a closed society.
This book is a passionate plea for Western assistance, without which there can be no successful transition from totalitarian rule to democracy or from central planning to a market economy. Vissza
