Dr. Oktay Aslanapa
Prof. Oktay Aslanapa was born in Kutahya on 17 December 1914. In 1938 he graduated from the Faculty of Literature, University of Istanbul. After studying Turkish and Islamic Arts in Germany and Austria and the completion of his doctorate on Die osmanischen Beitrage zur islamischen Baukusnt, he returned to his homeland. He became an assistant professor in the newly created Department of Art History in the Faculty of Literature, University of Istanbul. After writing his docent thesis on Ottoman Tiles of Kutahya (Osmanhlar devrinde Kutahya Cinileri) he became in 1960 a professor of the History of Art and the head of the department. In 1963 he founded the department of Turkish and Islamic Arts, and in 1977 was chosen as the head of The Institute of Art History. Following this, in 1982 with the reorganization in the university, he became a member of the Art History section of the Archeology and Art Faculty and the director.

Between 1946 and 1949 he worked with Prof. Ernst Diez and then with Kurt Erdmann from 1953-58. Since 1960 Dr. Aslanapa has excavated at Diyarbakir, Iznik, Kalehisar, Kayseri-Keykubadiye, Konya, Van and Bursa-Yenisehir, publishing numerous books on these and articles on Turkish Art. He has over the years advised numerous master and doctorate de gree candidates. He was the director of the First International Turkish Tile Congress. He has lectured and taught in many universities aboard on Turkish and Islamic Art.
His articles, essays and books have been published in both Turkish and many foreign languages. Vissza
