I was fifty-five miles out in the Gulf of Mexico when I began reading again. I had given up books during the first half of my walk across America. I wanted one hundred percent pure physical adventure, and besides, there was no extra room for anything in my backpack. Now here I was, working for a while in a roughneck crew, on an offshore oil rig, very aware that death was just a spark away. For relaxation, all of us caught fourteen-foot sharks. Somehow, that was not quite relaxing enough for me, so one night I began looking for something to read. There was a stack of raunchy magazines on the rig, and a closet full of Reader's Digest Condensed Books. I chose the books.
Since that night on the Gulf, I have found and read Condensed Books in the strangest places. In a Cajun shack in a Louisiana marsh, and in a log cabin in the Rocky Mountains. And I came across some more in an old trailer at a cowboy camp in Idaho that was fifty miles from the nearest town. 1 read them after munching down a T-bone.
During my walk, I met a lot of people who don't have time to get the latest and best books. Often, they live too far away from libraries and bookstores. If Reader's Digest editors didn't choose the right books and condense them expertly, lots of people would not be reading as much as they do. That would be a shame, because they might not have had the chance to read my book. Then they wouldn't have come along with me and heard America singing through its inspiring people.
There are many books that kindle dreams and lead to better living. They should not be missed. The folks at Reader's Digest do something about it. Take it from a person who's walked five thousand miles throughout this vast country. Reader's Digest Condensed Books really get around.
Reader's Digest Condensed Books are issued every two to three months. The typical volume contains four or five outstarding books :r> condensed form. None of the condensations in any volume has appeared in Reader's DigesO. itself. Any t< Her may receive this service by writing The Reader's Digest Association. Inc., Plersantville. N.Y. 10^70

It was an impossible love—the lowly Parisian seamstress, Louise Vernet, and the rich young cavalry officer, Pierre de Gand. "I forbid the marriage," thundered Pierre's godfather, Emperor Napoleon III; and in the swirl of revolution and the Crimean War their love was swept away. Then Louise, the protégée of eminent couturier Charles Worth, began a long, gallant climb to the top of the world of fashion, emerging a great designer in her own right.
