Preface This series should prove useful to learners of English who intend to visit Britain or who are already there and to those who are in contact with English people in other countries. Much of the material, however, may be of interest and value to all learners of English as an introduction to the everyday life, ideas, institutions and idioms of contemporary Britain. Book 2 is a continuation of Book 1 but could be used alone by a student who has already enough English to make himself understood on simple matters but wishes to feel at ease in the language and to be able to discuss fluently and colloquially many different aspects of British life and culture. As in Book 1 the aim is to provide material in the form of conversations, stories and explanations and then to encourage fluency by suggesting many different ways of utilising the material orally. At the same time a few of the more important technical aspects of the language are dealt with and considerable attention given to forms of speech including requests, expressions used on certain occasions to express various feelings, phrasal verbs and common idioms and colloquialisms. All of these are often heard in the everyday language used at the present time. One of the major difficulties of communication in another country is to grasp the meaning of what is said, as the native speaker hasobviously a very much wider rangé of expression to draw on. Another is for the visitor to make himself clearly understood in any of the variety of situations he may find himself. This series tries to cover as many subjects as practicable to enable the learner both to understand far more of what he hears and alsó to express very much more confidently his requirements and ideas.
