The revolution in modern physics and its repercussions in all fields of thought is the subject discussed in this book by four great European physicists: Werner Heisenberg, one of the founders of quantum mechanics and exponent of the «principle of uncertainty»; Erwin Schrodinger, who laid the basis of wave mechanics; Max Born, innovator and leader in many aspects of the new physics; and Pierre Auger, discoverer of the «Auger effect » in photoelectronics which is of basic importance to the study of atomic spectra.
Together they offer a comprehensive, nontechnical picture of the results achieved in the study of nature and of the theoretical concepts employed in tlie interpretation of the material world, focusing on questions essential to an understanding of the relationship between the natural sciences and other forms of intellectual endeavor. Heisenberg, ably confronting a broad range of philosophical problems, suggests that modern technology may soon enable man to solve... Tovább

Heisenberg, ably confronting a broad range of philosophical problems, suggests that modern technology may soon enable man to solve problems first raised by the philosophers of ancient Greece; Schrödinger expounds the physicist's complex image of material reality; Born describes the new sources of energy which are opening up a new era in the history of mankind; and Auger surveys the evolution of scientific thought, drawing provocative implications for humanistic ethics.
The efforts of these men of science to overcome the linguistic and conceptual barriers which separate scientific from other fields of thought are motivated by their desire not only to increase comprehension of the recent achievements in physics but also to provide a clear idea of the prospects which science has to offer to other branches of knowledge.
