The man around whose complicated personality the story revolves is Julian Morell, who starts after World War Two with one clever idea and makes it the basis for a vast network of products from cough mixture to cosmetics. As his life draws to an end there are six women who have some claim on his fortune.
Letitia, his mother, the ageless, still beautiful matriarch who started the company with him, and probably knows more than she lets on. Eliza, his first wife, mother of his only child, Roz. Roz has everything that it takes to run the empire, but greed' and ambition may be her downfall. Susan Johns, working class girl made good, who understands more about the company than any of them. Her support will be vital in the events which follow Julian Morell's death. Camilla, who runs the New York business - the perfect mistress. And lastly Phaedria, the second wife, as young as her own stepdaughter; it is her arrival on the scene which well and truly sets the cat among the pigeons. The lives of these six chic and powerful women have become entwined in a saga which has lasted for more than thirty years, but only two of them will become key players in an endgame to unravel the mystery that has shaped their destinies.
