OIL PAINTING:
TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS

Can painting be taught?
There is much that cannot be taught but only encouraged—ways of looking at things, ways of freeing the vision from the clutter that muddies it, ways of seeing the clutter itself. But there are also ways of expressing what one has learned to see, and these can be taught. For painting is not only an individual response but also a logical, communicative coherence of intent, material, and technique.
A teacher can point to an active line in a painting and explain how it interferes with the contemplative mood the artist hoped to invoke; he can show the student that the subtle tonal conception which is a failure in one medium might be realized in another; he can demonstrate different techniques in different media and give the student a free choice of all the means of artistic expression.

That is what Joseph Mugnaini does in his book. His thoughtful approach does not restrict the student to stale applications of tried-and-true techniques, but instead explains what the effects of specific paintings are and how these effects were produced—often by highly original methods. Most of the paintings chosen are oils, for the oil media are extremely versatile and have most of the characteristics of the other media as well as special qualities of their own. The emphasis is on those elements of painting that transcend period or style, and as In an Illustrated lecture the works of past and present artists are analyzed and compared. Specific methods of mixing and applying materials for various direct and Indirect methods are described—in many cases by the artists themselves, who explain what their Intention was and how they achieved it. There are step-by-step sequences showing how paintings are executed, reference charts Illustrating such basic considerations as tonality and color value, and color exercises that deal simply and directly with the properties of pigment. And every page is an encouragement to use the elements, materials, and techniques of painting as a natural extension of each painter's unique sensitivities and needs.
If you are an artist, an art student, an art teacher, or just a serious gallery-goer, this book will teach you a great deal of what can be taught about painting.
Joseph Mugnaini has attracted attention in many fields of art, including graphics, drawing, and painting. He has been a consistent prizewinner and is represented in many private and public collections, including those of the Library of Congress, the Los Angeles and Pasadena museums, Bradley University, and the University of Honolulu. His works were included in a recent international traveling exhibit sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the Society of American Graphic Artists.
Mr. Mugnaini is chairman of the drawing department at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, and he spends his summers teaching and conducting workshops at various institutions, including the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Oregon State College, and Utah State University. In 1968 he was named Art Teacher of the Year by the Los Angeles Art Teachers Association. Mr. Mugnaini is currently preparing for an exhibition of his works in various media.
