THE TECHNIQUE of teaching by pictures—generally agreed to be the finest method of all—has never before been so fully and successfully exploited as it is in this now world-famous encyclopaedia for children of 9 to 15 years. With -its excitingly different and fresh presentation, its publication set an entirely new standard in children's encyclopaedias and, in this revised edition, it continues to maintain its pre-eminent position.
Prepared under the distinguished joint advisory editorship of Prof. J. A. Lauwerys, D.Lit., D.Sc., F.R.I.C., Dr. R. W. Moore, D.Litt., and Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald, the work has been compiled by a team of over forty distinguished experts. It is illustrated by more than 2,500 pictures, half of them in colour, many of them full-page size, and all specially commissioned for this bcok and executed by nearly thirty leading artists of the day.
All the 384 large-size, illustrated pages are beautifully printed in sparkling photogravure. Of

these, no less than 96 (or one in every four) are in brilliant full colour, and a further 46 pages take the form of attractive two-colour displays. The volume contains in all 150,000 words of text. A comprehensive 9-page index, with some 5,000 separate references, accelerates and simplifies the finding of information on any given item.
Thus, by means of clear, simple text woven into page after page of wonderful coloured pictures, this up-to-the-minute, new-style junior reference book sets out, first and foremost, to capture the young reader's imagination and so make learning a pleasant and thrilling adventure. Historical events are translated into understandable human situations— scientific facts become exciting expeditions into undiscovered territory—the story of the world and its resources and the people around us—in fact, every aspect of life that young people are likely to encounter—suddenly, magically, becomes more vivid, more exciting than fiction.
Because their own genuine interest is aroused, children will read this book for sheer pleasure. In so doing, they will absorb a wealth of vital facts and useful information—easily, almost subconsciously acquiring that comprehensive background of sound general knowledge that spells success at school— and in later life.
