BASED on carefully selected and integrated materials, much of which has been disclosed for the first time at the Geneva Conference, this volume offers a clear, compact picture of the present status of the field of nuclear fuels.
Organized in three sections: the metallurgy of uránium and thorium; radiation effects; and solid and fluid fuels; it provides the user with the basic information necessary to fuel system design, to an understanding of problems unique to reactor systems, and to knowledge of the engineering principles and applications of specific fuel systems.

Dr. Dávid H. Gurinsky is Head, Metallurgy Division, Brookhaven National Laboratory. A graduate of New York University where he received his Ph.D. in 1942, Dr. Gurinsky holds

numerous patents in atomic energy development. He has written for Professional and business magazines and holds memberships in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Metals, Institute of Metals, and Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. George J. Dienes graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology where he received his D.Sc. in 1947 and is now Senior Physicist, Brookhaven National Laboratory. A contributor to such technical publica-tions as the Physical Review, Journal of Colloid Science, Journal of Chemical Physics, and several books, Dr. Dienes is a Fellow of the Physical Society and a member of Phi Betta Kappa.
