This dictionary grew out of Professor Einar
Haugen's many years of experience as a teacher of Norwegian and a student of linguistics. He found that the available Norwegian-English dictionaries were either outdated in their coverage or inaccurate in their translations. He therefore proposed to the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare a project to produce a new, entirely original dictionary of modern Norwegian on scientific principles. The Department agreed in 1961 to co-sponsor the project with the University of Wisconsin, and thereby enabled Professor Haugen to gather around him a staff of competent workers who cooperated with him in producing this new work in a relatively short time. Some of these were primarily experts in Norwegian, others in English; some were American-born, others Scandinavian, but all were familiar with both languages.
The result is this book, which earns pride of place as the most comprehensive Norwegian-English dictionary now... Tovább

Norwegians will find in it the first combined dictionary of their two literary languages, Bokmal and Nynorsk, and the first dictionary that gives both the grammar and pronunciation of all words included, while labeling their areas of usage and providing literary illustrations of their use (including many biblical references). The fact that the translations are into American English rather than British English will be a welcome innovation for those who find it useful to become familiar with educated American usage.
