Northumbria is one of the last unspoilt areas of Britain, a beautiful and ancient kingdom which was once the centre of European civilisation. It is a land of castles (Bamburgh, Raby, Alnwick) and priories (Lindisfarne, Tynemouth), the land of Bede, St Cuthbert and the visionary poet Caedmon, home of the warlike Percys and Nevilles, a land whose artists once produced the finest illuminated manuscripts in Europe, the best standing stone crosses, the most exquisite garnet and gold metalwork. It is now the least populated and least visited area of England.
The landscape of Northumbria is wild and romantic, with deserted seashores, moors, forests and valleys where the solitary walker can see wild goats, wild geese and night otters. It includes the ancient cities of Durham (with its castle and mighty cathedral dominating the River Wear) and Newcastle (once the most densely populated city in England apart from London).
