During the Early Renaissance, one of the greatest periods in the history of art, as part of the profound transformation taking place, many masterpieces of painting were produced in Northern Italy. The Budapest Museum of Fine Arts has in its collection many interesting paintings from a variety of artists who were working in Northern Italy at the time. László Mravik, a former member of the staff of the Museum of Fine Arts, has produced a book that constitutes a guide to the art of Tuscany, Umbria, Romagna, Venice and its environs, Lombardy, and the area of Piedmont, thus acquainting the reader with the richness of the quattrocento. The art of Tuscany, as represented by Luca Signoreili among others, and that of Umbria and Emilia, birthplace of Giovanni Santi (father of the great Raphael), and of Francesco Francia, are represented by paintings which point towards the supreme achievements of the High Renaissance. In the paintings of Carlo Crivelli and Marco Basaiti there may already be seen traces of the greatest century of Venetian painting,while in the secluded valleys of Piedmont, even as late as the first years of the sixteenth century, painting was still oldfashioned in conception and Gothic in spirit. The varied and manifold picture which emerges of the various schools contributes to a better understanding of the Italian Renaissance.
