Ninian Smart has ^een called the 'father of religious studies' on the basis of his pioneering work at the Universities of Lancaster and California Santa Bárbara, where he holds the polsts of Professor Emeritus and J. F. Rowny Professor.- He began his career teaching philosophy, before moving on to history and the philosophy of religion. He was fqitóding professor of Religious Studies at Lancaster.
