Nineteenth-century French painting is one of the most exciting chapters in the history of art. This period brought us the paintings of Dávid, Ingres, Deiacroix, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec. At the same time, it was the era which saw the inception of Symbolism and Impressionism, and in which these became the dominant genres. At this time Paris was regarded as the centre of the European art world. Nineteenth-century French painting retained many conservative academic tendencies, while simultaneously pursuing, in both theory and practice, the goals of the artistic revolutions. The achievements of Neo-Classicism and Romanticism, the liberation of form, colour and themc. and the theory of art for art's sake prospered side by side. Until recently there were many negative elements in the popular vievv of nineteenth-century art.
