W.C.P.C. 'Joe Orton has had many imitators but the great virtue of Nigel Williams' W.C.P.C. is that it matches both the candour and the daring of its dramatic predecessor's best work. It is a spiralling comic nightmare in which a raw, reactionary young P C. from Basingstoke joins the Indecency Unit of the Met's Vice Squad and embarks on a round-thetoilets clean-up campaign only to observe that everyone around him (both in and out of uniform) is as bent as nine-bob notes.' W.C.P.C. 'Joe Orton has had many imitators but the great virtue of Nigel Williams' W.C.P.C. is that it matches both the candour and the daring of its dramatic predecessor's best work. His first novel, My Life Closed Twice, was published in 1977 and was joint winner of the , Somerset Maugham Award. A second novel, Jack Be Nimble, appeared in 1980. A short play, Double Talk, was seen at the Square One Theatre, London, in 1976, and a television play, Talkin' Blues on BBC-2 in 1977. For his first stage play, Class Enemy (Royal Court Theatre, 1978), he was jointly named the year's most promising playwright. Class Enemy continues to be performed, with great success, internationally. His next three stage plays were seen in London during 1980: Trial Run (Anvil Productions in Oxford; Young Vic); Line . 'Em (Cottesloe Theatre); Sugar and Spice (Royal Court). A television play, Babylove, was transmitted by the BBC in 1981. W.C.P.C. was first presented at the Half Moon Theatre, London, in 1982. Nigel Williams is married with two sons and lives in London. METHUEN'S NEW THEATRESCRIPTS series aims to close the gap between the appearance of new work in the theatre and its publication in script form, and to make available new or unconventional work which might otherwise not appear in print. The prospect of a playwright being published as well as seen is not as rosy these days. It's therefore a welcome sight to find Methuen launching a cheap, accessible, easily readable series of paperbacks.' Steve Grant, Time Out Vissza
