Nicholas Nickleby was Dickens's third successive
triumph after Pickwick and Oliver Twist. Sydney
Smith declared that although he had held out hitherto
against Dickens's charms, he had capitulated
entirely to Nicholas Nickleby; the book was seized
upon by plagiarists and pirates and several drama-
tizations of it were staged at London theatres before
Dickens had even finished writing it.
We need not look far for the reasons for this public
success. Wackford Squeers and Dotheboys Hall have
become part of national folklore, but they are sup-
ported by a gallery of delicious comic types: Mrs
Nickleby, Mantalini and Crummies and his troupe.
For Nicholas Nickleby is the work of a young man at
the height of his powers, and it will remain one of the
touchstones of the English comic novel.
