FOREWORD
As every pediatrician knows, somé of the most common and yet perplexing questions raised by a baby's parents to the physician concern crying. Unfortunately, however, this subject is alsó in an area in which very little is known, and consequently the doc-tor often feels at a loss for an accurate ex-planation. Indeed, very little research has been done concerning the cry of normál children and it is only recently that objective methods for such a study have become available.
It is well known that sick children, particularly those with brain injuries, cry differently than healthy children. It is, therefore, not unlikely that the child's cry could be an aid in diagnosis. This could be important especially in the postnatal period when, for evident rea-sons, it is often difficult to arrive at a correct diagnosis.
The four articles constituting this Sup-plement describe methods for the study of the cry and other related upper respiratory actions of the newborn. These consisted es-sentially of magnetic tape recording, sound spectrography, and cineroentgenography, supplemented at times by plethysmo-graphic spirometry and intraesophageal pressure recording.
The first two articles are descriptions of cry sounds and of cry motions of normál newborn infants. The third article describes the cry and other respiratory
actions of normál infants during the natal transition. The fourth article is an applica-tion of these composite observation methods to a pathologic situation, namely the distortions and compensatory mecha-nisms in palate abnormality.
The authors acknowledge the unique circumstances and sponsorships which made this work possible. This research was originally sponsored by the Swedish Medical Research Council and the Asso-ciation for the Aid of Crippled Children of New York. The United Cerebral Palsy Research and Educational Foundation contributed extensively to these studies in 1959 and 1960. Dr James Bosma par-ticipated in the project while a Fellőw of the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness and completed the data analysis of three of these articles while on the staff of the National In-situte of Dental Research, in Bethesda, Maryland. The National Institute of Child Health and Humán Development has shouldered the publication expenses of this Supplement. Production costs of the related phonographic recording were provided from the Medical Sonics Research Fund. These investigations have been carried out in the Southern Mater-nity Hospitál thanks to the kind coopera-tion of the head of the hospitál, Dr Gunnar Domeij.
