One of the youngest of the world's great cities—it received its first official name, Nieuw Amsterdam, in 1625. The little village of Dutch Colonial times became in a few centuries a city whose buildings and streets, neighborhoods and districts are household words everywhere.
This city, which is a showcase for the powerful and assured, also nourishes the hopeful and ambitious.
